Poo without pong

Richard Grayling, Te Poi, milks 330 cows on 120 ha.  Richard is a fan of a biological approach to farming and for a number of years has spread manure from a nearby poultry operation on his pastures.

The strong ammonia smell associated with poultry manure has created a few headaches for Richard in the past.  However, since using BioAg that problem has vanished.  Richard sprays the litter in the poultry sheds with one litre of Digest-it per tonne.  He then transports the manure to a pad on his property and lets it mature before spreading on his paddocks.  Since using Digest-it he has noticed that not only has the smell gone but the manure is broken down better and is consequently easier to spread.  Richard feels that the pasture seems to respond better to the treated manure and that, despite the very dry summer and autumn conditions, his pastures have held on better and stayed greener.

Digest-it is also used to treat effluent ponds to initiate microbial activity, break down algal growth and oxygenate the water.  By converting free nitrates into biological forms when the effluent is sprayed out over pastures it enhances biological activity and stimulates growth of nutritious pastures.

Digest-it is also commonly used as a compost activator and to rapidly digest and convert crop residues into humus and plant food.  Digest It sprayed onto the floor of calf pens has a similar effect.  Benefits include reduced carry-over of soil borne pathogens with fertilizer utilization, and improved moisture holding capacity, tilth and workability.  Digest-it applied to calf rearing pen floors will reduce odour and provide a healthier environment.
